I took it as meaning V the lad, as in V the man. But that might be too British an interpretation. I remember my father telling me of a work trip he and his boss did to the north of England, visiting various customers. As they drove out of Lancashire, Denis, his boss, saw the sign "West Yorkshire" by the side of the road. Decades later he still remembered how Denis had beamed and said under his breath, "Ee, Denis lad, tha's home." Hence my seeing "V-lad" in much the same way.
