Howard flew B-29s (or was it 25s?) in WWII. He had some great war stories.
*sigh*
He was Cyndi's uncle. He passed early this morning in Sioux Falls.

Cyndi, I had some good phone conversatinos with Uncle Howard these last few weeks. I am glad to have had them and we talked about lots of memories.
He told me to take care of Lucas.

Sioux Falls - Howard A. Allen, 83, died February 1, 2007 with his wife and daughter at his side. Howard, the youngest of 11 children, was born and educated in Illinois. He developed farming, construction, engineering, mechanical, radio, and flying skills in his early years, joining the US Air Corps at age 18.
The decorated veteran of WWII was shot down and survived a 29 day MIA walk from Budapest to Italy and a ditch of his plane in the Adriatic. Because of his distinguished service and skills, he was recalled and served in the Korean Conflict.
Howard settled in Sioux Falls and worked for Cumming Motor Co. before opening Allen´s Auto Clinic in 1956 and Howie´s Radiator Service. He held multiple mechanic certifications and drove his modified stock car many years at the local speedway and midget in St. Louis.
Howard was a member of Calvary Cathedral Episcopal Church. He was a Mason and active in Trinity Lodge and El Riad Shrine, Past Commander of the Legion of Honor, and Past Drill Master of the LOH Foot Patrol, which won many honors.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret (Thompson) Allen, daughter Shiela (Paul) Brimberry, grandchildren Laura and Matthew, nieces and nephews in Illinois, and the extended Thompson family. A public memorial service with Masonic Service (Tribute) will be held Friday, February 9, 2007 at 7:00 P.M. at Barnett-Lewis Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Shriner´s Hosp. For Children PO Box 1203, Sioux Falls 57101 and condolences to 401 S. Glendale Ave., Sioux Falls 57104.

My belated condolences, Lance, Cyndi, and Bill Thompson. I actually played with the El Riad Big Band for a couple of years, but I'm sorry to say that I don't recall if I ever met him.
