In the Ham Radio classes that Cyndi and I are now putting on, we are finally able to correct some of this drivel. People had been previously taught that VHF/UHF propagation is "line of sight" in that it won't curve over the horizon. A nice story indeed, but clearly it can't be the reality of the situation on a planer planet.
My simple research has shown that it is the air density that reduces these signals over distance. The more air they must travel through the weaker they get, until they are no longer detectable. Makes perfect sense, right?
And of course, increasing the elevation of your antenna helps overcome this because everyone knows the air is less dense the higher you go.
No trees were killed in the posting of this message.
