Gunfight at the OK Corral

It was on the electric television this afternoon, so I watched. Well, I had it on while I was working on something on the computer. So I didn't watch that closely. Among the cast was Spartacus, playing Doc Holliday.

It was alright.

But it got me reading up on the actual gunfight, which was near, but not "at", the OK Corral. Tensions between the Earp brothers and the "Cowboys", which included Ike and Billy Clanton, had been building for a long time. There was a whole city-dweller versus rancher aspect to it - the Earps were often accused of using their legal authority (mostly held by Virgil, not Wyatt) to protect the interests of the townsfolk, including themselves, at the expense of the ranchers. But "cowboy" suggests a level of illegality - supposedly at this time and place, to call a rancher a "cowboy" would have been insulting.

Of interest was the election for the Pima County sheriff on 2 November 1880. Democrat Charles Shibell was expected to lose to Republican Bob Paul, but ended up winning in an upset victory. Support for Shibell was so strong that he received 103 votes (against 1 for Paul) in San Simeon precinct, a district where Ike Clanton was one of the ten registered voters.

I am uncertain whether Trump's people have referenced this election in any of their lawsuits.
