New Guy Ritchie war flick

Great song? Good show? Bad movie? What should be enjoyed and what should be avoided.

It looks like jolly nonsense but I doubt it makes a lot of sense. There seems to be some confusion about the SOE, the SAS pictured on the cover of the book it is based on, and Commandos. But that just serves me right for googling it.

Aaaah, lots of German Nazis not speaking German but English with a fake German accent. What could possibly go wrong?

That's not close to the least historically accurate thing in the trailer.

At some point I'll put together a list of the most egregious errors in the trailer, or maybe not.

All I know is it will be over the top. I wasn't expecting much historical accuracy from it (or at least not any more than Tarantino's WWII flick) and I'm a bit surprised they even bothered with mentioning a link to any real events. :)

That's what I was thinking. You don't come to a Guy Ritchie war flick for any kind of accuracy. At all, not only historically. It is probably the kind of movie where the hero hides from AR fire behind a tabletop and lives, like The Bruce once did.

My problem with anything vaguely historical is that there are so many great true stories that could be told without turning them into cartoonish nonsense.

There is that, yes. I get that feeling with vaguely sciency movies. But I wouldn't make lists of errors for Spaceballs, Starship Troopers or Galaxy Quest because, well, you know why: Being cartoonish nonsense is the whole point.

I do enjoy cartoonish nonsense, but don't say it's a true story.

“Based on a true story”

If it were true, they’d just say

“This is a true story”

"SAS - Rogue Heroes" was, I suspect, more accurate. For a start, it depicted literally fatal screw-ups caused by British public school arrogance (which apparently genuinely happened), German and Italian soldiers speaking their own languages rather than accented English and the founder of the SAS being captured. And both he and his successor being portrayed as the flawed individuals they apparently were. Although Eve Mansour, the love interest, apparently never existed.

Point well taken, but I think you are overburdening a harmless, entertaining flick with your striving for historical truth. Theoretical physicists don't, as a rule hold Star Trek in contempt because it promulgates unrealistic physics and thus adds stupid to the world, and I don't spend my time lamenting the existence of Dr. House, ER, or Chicago Hope. So let's just take "based on a true story" with a wink, have a beer every time a stupid Nazi with fake German accent is killed (that'll be way enough beer for everyone), and go on with it celebrating our hangover, shall we?

I didn't watch SAS Rogue Heroes for the same reason I don't watch much historical drama. The trailers put me off for one thing; just because a man is nicknamed Paddy doesn't mean he's a bogtrotter from the rural south, the exact opposite in fact. I'm not sure if Mayne was flawed or damaged, he certainly didn't get the help he needed. I know people who liked most of it so I should probably give it a go.
