Giant pigeons

NZ Wood Pigeon eating seeds in Kowhai tree on my front lawn just now. Must be Spring already

Wow, those things look huge!

But then, it's hard to judge size from photos sometimes (or even in real life), so I looked them up. And what I found, confirmed that they are huge.

But I also got the impression they are non-migratory, so it is the thing that it is eating, rather than the bird itself, that indicates spring is coming?

Yep, they eat last season's seeds from Kowhai trees during spring - these seeds hang on the tree through the winter and go nice and hard with plenty of flavour and this is a nice snack for these birds. Also helps to spread the seeds around.
