I was taken out for lunch today, a very rare perk in these troubled times. We had an excellent curry with rice and naan, washed down with chai, just the thing to set a chap up for the afternoon. The only problem was the idiot at the next table who regaled her friends with her dietary problems, specifically her inability to eat unpasteurised food. Now my recollection of these things is that all milk generally sold* in the UK for my entire life has been pasteurised, and in consequence most cheese, dairy etc. has been pasteurised at some point in the process and is safe. Not blue cheese, some other soft cheeses etc. but I really can't see a major problem.

How wrong I was, apparently all milk, all cheese, some breads and white rice are all unpasteurised and so inedible to this woman. The first two are pasteurised and I agree the second two aren't pasteurised but have no need to be but still, what do I know? I have no idea if brown rice is pasteurised or if she just never tries to eat it.

This is up there with the mindy outside the station one day handing out free samples of an energy drink:
Her: it is a natural alternative to coffee.
Me: eh?
Her: unlike coffee this is a natural stimulant.
Me: unlike coffee which is a bean that grows on bushes in the wild?
Her: but this is natural.
Me: so is coffee.
Repeat until I had to catch my train.



*it is possible to get "raw" milk but I suspect you have to look hard and pay a premium for it.

Woman the first: I bet she can't safely consume several disparate foods, if there's anybody watching, because Look-At-Me!

Woman the second: Ha!

These types of things give me real concern for the future of mankind. Devolving the average intelligence of the species can't be good.

And - unpasteurized milk often is safe for consumption*. If it weren't, I'd have been dead years ago.** Same thing for eggs.***

*Though pasteurized is less risky. The process is warranted, in my opinion.
**Grew up on a dairy.
***We didn't have chickens, but we got eggs from my mom's uncle and aunt who did, and from the hatchery in town until it closed.

If it wasn't for Pasteur, we'd probably still be having large families to compensate for high mortality. Bad enough that we're now contemplating overpopulation and global warming. We need a Pasteurisation process for pathological climate change.

I wonder what she thinks of yogurt, then?

I live on an old farm, used to have chickens. Used to go out and grab a couple eggs from under a hen, despite her objections, take them inside, wipe the chicken shit off them and cook them for my meal. Didn't know you could pasteurize an egg, wouldn;t that cook it?

Cooking it that way would certainly do more than pasteurise it

Here's a recent article in the CDC EID journal that says that raw dairy is less safe than pasteurized. I think it's filed under No Shit, Sherlock.
