One of the first jobs I had was for a company that made electric motors. Some customers required that the base be cut off. This involved a large circular cutting wheel, and no face protection.
Aluminum dust would blow back in the face of the operator. I wore a surgical mask (not supplied by the company) but when I removed it, streaks of aluminum dust were visible up my cheeks and into my nose.
I quit that job after about a week, but some poor souls had been working there for years. If I was religious, I would say, "May God have mercy."
I can still cough up a finishing nail as a party trick.
