5th February 1985 – Ugo Vetere, the mayor of Rome, and Chedli Klibi, the mayor of Carthage, meet in Tunis to sign a treaty of friendship officially ending the Third Punic War which lasted 2,131 years.

11 March 1985: after the previous two leaders each died well under 2 years of coming to power, a younger candidate was chosen to become General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. A Western-educated economist with new ideas. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Should that be, a Moscow-educated lawyer?

March 16.

One of my personal heroes, Hugh Thompson, dropped his helicopter in the middle of a war crime, and tried to stop it.

And, my old friend Alan Krueger, topped himself. I don’t know why.

You never really know why, but there was nothing you could have done.

My understanding was he was a Paris-educated economist. But he may have done a law degree at MGU as well - I don’t know.

This is Gorbachev we’re talking about?

(Has to be, no one else became General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union on March 11, 1985.)

Unless the airport terminal has been renovated recently, this rooftop is arguably nicer.

The man to whom these lines, by "the other" W. W. were adressed,

When lilacs last in the dooryard bloom’d,
And the great star early droop’d in the western sky in the night,
I mourn’d, and yet shall mourn with ever-returning spring.

Ever-returning spring, trinity sure to me you bring,
Lilac blooming perennial and drooping star in the west,
And thought of him I love.

(+ 15 more long verses)

was buried 165 years ago today. Being shot in the face is a nasty way to go, but it sure brought some intense and competent accolades.
