Way back in the Before Times, when I worked in a bank and The Mem was a student in Edinburgh, somewhere about 1979, I used to listen to Bat out of Hell when I was getting changed to ride my motor bike from Dumfries to Edinburgh. Riding through a freezing winter’s night on my way to Edinburgh for the weekend and singing the album in my head got me most of the way up there. Mr Loaf is one of the reasons* I have been married for nearly forty years. For my twenty first birthday The Mem took me, and a number of others, to The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I was never a fan of Mr Loaf, but appreciate that his music was important for vast numbers of people and it improved, and in some cases changed the courses of, their lives - and for that I’ll join Heid in raising a glass. RIP.

I learned last night that he died of Covid, and was a vocal anti-vaxxer.

This changes my opinion of him, and makes me very sad.
