Sidney Poitier, dead at 94.
No trees were killed in the posting of this message.
However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

A great actor and, of course, immensely inspirational and influential.

Yes indeed, a great loss. Apparently when he first went for an acting job, he was laughed at and told to get a job as a dishwasher instead. His determination led him to give the world great movies but also much more.

Ridiculous maybe to us, but I don't know. Although times have definitely changed to a fair extent, a lot of Phil Ochs's "Love Me, I'm A Liberal" still rings true today - including, in many places, "And I love Porto Ricans and Negroes (sic) Provided they don't move next door."

Ochs's description of political liberals as "10 degrees to left of centre in good times, 10 degrees to the right of centre if it affects them personally" is uncomfortable, possibly a little unfair to some, but perhaps not completely unfounded.
