R.I.P. Niki Lauda

Postby Arneb » Tue May 21, 2019 5:55 am

Died on Monday, aged 70

Winner of three Formula 1 Racing World Championships (1975, '77, '84)
Survivor of one of the most horrid racing accidents, which nearly burnt him to a crisp
Triple organ recipient (2 kidneys and - in August last year - a lung)
Aviator, founder of airlines
Well-liked TV commentator, known for his sober and unrelenting analyses
Head of Mercedes Formula 1 Supervisory Board, responsible for Mercedes' current gold run in F1

And he died, literally, of the flu. He was in and out of the hospital after a influenza indection in February, and the sequelae of the infection finally got him. It wouldn't helped him, but get yourself vaccinated, folks!

Sad news, I will miss him. He always had interesting comments even in his latest segment of his career with Mercedes.
My younger brother died from flu complications in '14, it was a bad year here for that. He was stubborn (about going to hospital) and it cost him the ultimate price.

Awful, g-one. Really sorry.

Sorry to hear of Lauda dying. He seemed like a genuinely good sort, and indestructible.

That sucks g-one, it's not something you expect people to die of these days, Lauda yes because his lungs were damaged by the fire but no-one else.
Get it up ye.

He had a transplant ;) . But still, of course, he was severely immunnocompromised due to his medications, and infections can also trigger a rejection reaction. Living with a lung transplant is often less long-term than with a heart, liver or kidney transplant. It's a delicate organ in that respect.
