The last of the great chansonniers of the second half of the 20th century, impeccably elegant, ironic, of perfect bearing, his songs sung in a seemingly artless, offhand way, but with an unerring sense of timing - and everything under the common attitude of infinite sadness at what humans can inflict on each other.
