And just a day ago I was applauding his decision to stop seeking treatment, and just live out what life is left in dignity and peace. I am sorry he only lasted a day at it.

I kind of took yesterday's news as a clue we were down to just days left. Too bad. I hope he went peacefully.

And I hope he haunts Trump in the white house.

Yes indeed, RIP. He wasn't a man I agreed with on everything (he was a Republican, after all!) but he was a man of principle. We shall indeed remember the contrast between his dignity and Trump's mocking of him.

Sad to hear this. It would be nice if his peers on both sides could be inspired by his sense of decency and act accordingly.

I disagreed with him on most things political, but I saw him as sincere. He certainly deserved better than Trump.

He did select Sarah Palin as his running mate, so maybe not the best judge of things.

The thinking was that he was perceived as a liberal and that Palin would bring the conservatives in. As Heid says, not the best judgment call. But still all in all a good man.

I think that election was where it all started to go wrong for people who might have liked him before.

The Republican party has radicalised to a point where possibly Ronald Reagan, and definitely Richard Nixon, would be considered radical left-wing extremists today. In 2000, McCain ran for the presidency as a more moderate Republican, and lost to George W Bush. Come 2008, we have the new, much more right-wing, McCain. Obviously that's going to make some people like him better, and others like him less well.
