R.I.P. Kofi Annan

Died in Switzerland today, age 80.

Being Secretary General of the U.N., he failed at many things. He could not keep Srebrenica and the Irak war from happening. It is probably the nature of the job. Still, he showed that international politics can be more than alpha male antics and Cold War style blockade, as it mostly is today.

And, whoda thunk, not one word of respect or condolences from the government of this our beloved greatest Nation of the entire world, ever.

Indeed. Those were very, very diffent times. I wouldn't have thought this possible, but I'd take back G.W. any day now.

I think it was Clinton who "appointed" Annan.

That is of course, correct. It was 1996, and the Clinton administration put a lot of pressure behind his election. However, his re-election on 29 June, 2001 (now THAT is in the deep past for us, right? Pre-9-11) was tolerated/promoted by the young first G.W. administration.

It's ironic - when you see George W.'s occasional public appearances now, he seems decidedly reasonable. But then, he no longer has Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld behind him.

Arneb is indeed right - pre-9/11 seems another era. Not to mention pre-1989.
