Apart from any moral issues, I was somewhat astonished that Rajoy should be so monumentally stupid as to hand the moral high ground to the independence movement, in a present box, with compliments. Gunning down people at a polling station, even if it's rubber bullets "only", is close to optimal if you are keen to take the asshole role.

My image of this tragedy is two trains approaching each other on the same track. The drvers both now full wellthey are on a collision course, and they both bring their engine to top speed because they are absolutely convinced thy have the goddam RIGHT to steer their train on the ourse tvey think is the correct one, and if tve other guy is too stupid to see it, tough luck for him.
