You can say what you want about the Soviet Union, they have the best National Anthem ever!

I'll give it them it sounds great, though I actually prefer our own, musically (in fact, ideologically, too).

Yeah, yours is pretty good too.

And my comments are only regarding the music, not the ideology.

I'm partial to yours as well.
Partly from hearing it almost every weekend during the Schumacher era of F1  , partly from familiarity having heard hymns set to the Haydn tune.

Our unofficial national anthem "If You Hate The Fucking English Clap Your Hands" is beloved across the globe.

I found "Rangers" and "Germans" but not "English". :(

Of course, the other unofficial anthem of that part of the world is "A Scottish Breakaway". An unashamedly Republican anthem sung to the tune of the anthem of the Ulster Unionists, which I haven't quite got my head round yet!

Arneb, music and ideology are often not intertwined. Your national anthem is indeed great, but the one that previously ruled in your particular part of Germany is more beautiful.

I disagree here, too :D . I found Eisler's tune cheesy, lame, and uninspiring. Haydn's tune, on the other hand... It is really best played as a string quartet, maybe as four voice choir; the Thscingderassabumm version you hear at football internationals is quite dreadful.

Arneb you have a point about Haydn, although just as I am more positive than you are about the old GDR anthem, I am also less harsh about the football international version of the FRG one. Particularly as I have yet to hear any national anthem sung at a sports match that sounds good. OK, maybe Hayley Westenra singing God Defend New Zealand excepted, but only because the crowd have the good sense to shut up and leave it to her. Ah, this is getting too close to a different forum. I'll post a current events one later!
