President Bush Address To The Nation

Wow!

Look at the background. There is no sound. There are no lights.

Everytime I hear President Bush speak, I feel proud to be an American. 8)

The people of New Orleans believe that the President is sincere in his efforts to rebuild the city.

YET, THE PRESS (ABC News) IS TRYING TO PRESSURE THE FOLKS INTO BAD MOUTHING THE PRESIDENT'S WORDS.

The people are admitting they were told to evacuate, but they didn't believe the severity of the Hurricane.

The people are blaming the Mayor of the City for not fixing the Levee's prior to the Hurricane. The floods from the broken Levee's were what devastated the city of New Orleans.

I'm quoting from the testimonial's.

Did you hear what fellow Chicogan Lewis Farrakan said? He has a reliable source who says that the levee was blown up, to flood all the black homes.

If people aren't going to say something that will make things better, I wish they would just keep their mouths shut.

I was listening to the Man Cow show on the way home, and he hates Farrakan. Man Cow slams Farrakan all the time. He mentioned what you said Superluminal, too. Man Cow doesn't understand why no one (Politician or Public) stands up to the words of Farrakan. Man Cow calls Farrakan something, but I forget what it is - it's funny.

Mind you, Man Cow is not a lover of Republican's nor Dummicrat's (his words). I do believe he leans toward the Republican side of thinking, though. He had Newt Newt Gingridge as a guest speaker today. Newt has a lot of great ideas for rebuilding New Orleans. His ideas expand off of President Bush's speech.

One that stood out was let the folks stuck in the welfare system build their own homes (using Habitat for Humanity). Another was using the concept from ~Work Force to get the folks educated and trained for an occupation. Apparently, ~Work Force has the best success rate for success in getting people weened off of welfare.

Man Cow suggested to allow the folks to choose their school for their children, since the kids only have a 50% graduation rate. He mentioned the introduction of school vouchers --> I think this is the program for volunteers to earn credit for a college education.

These are good ideas for all lower income families. After seeing all those displaced people, I'm inclined to give special treatment to New Orleans right now.

I believe that the levees are under the auspices of the US Army Corps of Engineers. Not that viciously blaming them will help anything, either. Many things went wrong, and in the end, I'm sure that a great many people (including many in the federal government) will be found to be responsibe for the lack of preperation and response.

The Levees are under the control of the local Levee Board. The Corp of Engineer executes the projects under their control if it passes the economics test (that the cost of the project is less than the economic benefit). For the last several years the Levee Board around New Orleans has been pushing projects to support gambling. The local paper has been writing about this issue for a long time.

Enough though it is called the Army Corp of Engineers it is not under the direct contol of the President. Most of the people in ACE are civilians and their direction comes from Congress (who does the funding) and a whole series of local boards.

Ok. Again, I make an uninformed statement...

I wouldn't be surprised if at least some commendations are doled out. Some of the responders deserve medals. Of course, determining who deserves a medal and who doesn't is fairly subjective, and the process is bound to be scrutinized and debated to death. :?

You know what is really fascinating - the media is stringing up FEMA and the President over this but I don't seem to remember the same outcry in the 1995 Chicago Heatwave where about 740 people died during that natural diaster (I assume heat waves are a natural diaster). Why weren't they screaming about FEMA not moving in there? More people died there than in New Orleans what could be the difference?

Heard a story on radio today, from the NO Picyune, I'll look for the link and post it if I can find it. Anyway, the last time that Sen. Mary "Punch Out Bush" Landreu ran for re-election she was down in the polls. With only hours before the polls closed, her campaign orgonized 140 buses, vans and trucks with loud speakers to get people out to vote.

Funny how people, when their political tail is on the line, can get things done.

Down hear in Arkansas, LA political corruption has been the subject of jokes since way before I was born.

LA politics was a joke when I lived there 25 years ago and number has never gotten better. When I was there, I accidently wondered into one of the projects and a nice, older gentlemen escorted me out and gave me directions. Last time I was there (about 2 years ago) I told some people that story and they told me if it happed today, I would be lucky to be found beaten but alive.

Just sad  - on the other hand, I got to show my wife that, yes, there are male streetwalkers in the French Quarter  .

The story was in a 1996 edition of the Lafayette La. news. Appearantly no longer on line.

When I was stationed at Barksdale AFB near Shreveport back in the early 80's, there was a joke going around, that if you wanted to make extra money, just go out on election day and walk in and out of the polling places. There were so many people buying votes and not trying to hide it. You could pick up some extra cash if they thought you were a voter.
