I originally found this on GLP and thought it was fabricated. It is not. This is an actual warning issued by the National Weather Service regarding Hurricane Katrina.

Read this and other warnings at The NWS Site.

Some of the first reports I've heard, the eye veered to the east and didn't make a direct hit on N.O. Part of the Superdome roof was ripped off but there has been no flooding so far.

One report yesterday said, "There are only five catagorys for hurricanes. But if we were create a cat. 6, Katrina would be the first."

Makes sense, sort of... The current categories are 20MPH increments of wind speed (155MPH for category 5), and Katrina was up around 175MPH.

The thing is, Katrina wasn't the first to have wind speeds that high. Gilbert, in 1985, had sustained winds peak at 185MPH. Camille's sustained winds reached 190MPH...

So... more sensationalism from the media it seems.

Given that energy is a function of the square of speed, a given mass of air moving at 190 mph has 1.5 times as much energy as at 155 mph. But whether wind speed and destructive power are related in such a way, I do not know...

The biggest problem with the hurricane scale is that it does not take into account the area effected. Katrina had the 4th deepest depression (lowest pressure) ever recorded. Many times, such storms are compact. For example, Charlie had a radius (distance from the center to the point where the winds were less than hurricane strength) of 10 miles. Katrina had a radius of 125 miles. Charlie was actually stronger when it hit land than Katrina but less damage resulted.
"Mars" is also a chocolate bar found on Earth. These are highly concentrated sources of carbohydrates, which are of vital importance to many carbon based life forms. Mars bars are slightly rippled with a flat underside. They are sometimes used in English courtship rituals in which the female performs various allegorical oral acts with the chocolate bar, which is donated by the male as part payment for this spectacle.
