David Davis resigned his seat as an MP and as a shadow cabinet minister in protest against the government's plans for longer detention of suspects and the introduction of ID cards. This has probably ended his political career, but last night he won the bye election. The Lib Dems didn't stand as they agreed with his stance, and Labour didn't stand as they knew they would get a hiding.
It was the largest number of candidates ever even without the two big parties and some of the usual nutters who agreed with him.
