The World's Newest Country?

It hasn't been under the control of the various incarnations of Serbia/Yugoslavia for years, but Kosovo got tired of this ambiguous Taiwan-like existence, and opted for formal independence. We will see if it lasts...

This has been on the cards for a while, the underlying problem (and the reason it hasn't happened before) is that while now ethnically Albanian the area contains the old Serb heartlands.

Imagine if you will a US icon like the Alamo now being in the hands of spanish speaking Mexicans . . . er . . .

I realize that many countries around the world were simply cobbled together by the superpowers (England, France, Germany, Russia etc.) in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Nevertheless, it concerns me to see the world breaking up into "city states". Can this be a good thing, in our little global villiage? If it happens, where must it eventually lead? (Hint: read history.) :(

Yeah, I hated when Gaul broke up into France and germany and some of those littler ones.

WHich part of history covers the global state as a conglomeration of a bazillion city states?

Yes. Gaul was cobbled together by a great empire, Rome.

So were many nations and empires before and after.

I was referring to more modern times.

The point I sought to make was, how many wars were fought to create Gaul, and then how many wars did France, Germany et al fight after its dissolution?

Sadly, it seems every little city state/nation wars with its neighbors. Then the most aggressive conquers all the others to form an “empire”. Then the factions rise up in civil war and … that was my point.

An endless, pointless cycle of bloodshed, horror and waste which goes on to this day.

Sorry if my hasty post was unclear.

So within one "nation" they all fight and squabble amongst themselves. Then they break up into a slew of smaller states and they all fight and squabble amongst themselves. I'm not sure where they put borders much matters.

I do know that when Indiana finally decides to invade, I'll be defending Michigan. Always good to know Hoosier enemy.

^ Enzo, it's been less than two (long) lifetimes since the horror of the American civil war.

Better to fight with words than bullets.

Um, are we disagreeing, or just good naturedly elbowing each other in the ribs??

Hoosier enemy

Doesn't matter. The opportunity to make a funny trumps anything else.

A late friend of mine found out he had terminal cancer. He was telling me one time about his support group. They had one rule - you could ALWAYS interrupt anything with a joke. He wanted to bring me to one of his meetings to do just that. ALas, he only lasted about a week after that, so I never got to go. But it seemed to me to be a darn good philosphy to live by.

I'm gonna go dig out my Rebal flag. Seems like a good time for the south to rise again. 8)

Yep. Agree 100%. The last sound I want to hear is laughter at the last wisecrack I made.

Or maybe ... oh. Oh. OHOHOHOH ...

If I have a choice, definately the latter. Just hope I am not alone at the time.
