Hillary dead from heart attack

Postby Enzo » Fri Jan 11, 2008 6:58 am

Sir Edmund Hillary died of a heart attack today in New Zealand. He was 88.

55 years ago he was the first to climb to the top of Mount Everest, apparently because it was there.

What I think made Ed truly great, was that he parlayed a dangerous stunt into a lifetime of service to humanity.

The gangly New Zealander devoted much of his life to aiding the mountain people of Nepal and took his fame in stride, preferring to be called "Ed" and considering himself just an ordinary beekeeper.

"Sir Ed described himself as an average New Zealander with modest abilities.

The Kiwis are giving him a state funeral, which probably means the PM will wear a big hat. Someone will mumble something like "The big bastard was a good bloke . . .", then they'll all look a bit sheepish and get hammered.

While I appreciate the wordplay in the title, perhaps any discussions about US politics could be moved to a different thread? He was after all an apolitical Kiwi.

I agree with Haid. Sir Ed was a man, modest to a fault, who accomplished much good in his life. A little respect is due.

There are other threads where cheap political shots can be taken.

Here's something interesting. A picture of Hillary holding a picture of Hillary.

I have great respect for Sir Edmund. I also have respect for the institution of humor. As soon as we start to put boundaries on humor, we all turn into cabbages.

If Sir Ed were a member of your family I would never want to poke at him. But he is not. I think it is only honest that anything is fair game in humor.

And if you look at the opening post, it was straight. Nothing political other than its juxtaposition with the political rantings of BT. Of course it was written knowing it would hook most of you. But other than the requests to move politics elsewhere, just what political shots are in this thread? I don't see any.

Earlier, there were a number of posts in this thread that now seem to have been moved elsewhere, as per Heid's suggestion. I believe KLA2 is referring to the content of those posts, but he can set me straight if I misspeak...

Enzo: the political comments have been split into the "Cheap shots at Hillary" thread. Those are what KLA2 and I were referring to. It was some of those which were just dragging this thread into yet another Hillary/Britney bickerfest.

I have no problem with the thread title, which is both factual and misleading, :D or wth your OP which is a straight "in memorium" post.

I suspect most of the posts that were split off were in response to the earlier ones with no thought as to which thread they were in. No harm done Enzo.

I'm sorry. I should have posted:

Cheap Political Shots at Hillary split and moved here.

Enzo, my comment was not directed at you. In fact, I complimented you on your double entendre.

Sorry if that was not clear. You did not take any 'cheap political shots."

From the little I know of Sir Ed, he would get a laugh out of your remarks. Then put the bite on you to contribute to a school in Nepal.

How are these cheap shots? Are you being impartial?

He doesn't need to be impartial, it's HIS forum.

If you bothered to read the thread(s), Bill, you would see that it was I who mentioned "cheap political shots". Lance merely moved those portions of the thread not respectfully dedicated to the memory of Sir Edmund Hillary.

I was going to mention that, but I figured he wouldn't read that either.
