Musharraf wins third term

Postby Мастер » Sat Oct 06, 2007 1:33 pm

He was a reluctant coup leader, but once in, found it wasn't so bad, and decided to stay.

Well, don't know if that is good or bad. Pakistan has been an ally it the GWOT, though not a particularly good ally.

I'm kind of up-in-the-air about this, too. Pundit on both sides of the fence seem to be rather blaise about it, sooo ...

I guess we'll see where they head from here.

What I don't get is the rise of fundamentalism. I mean, I get it (fear of the unknown future and what it holds), but ... really, why? Why are you afraid? I guess that's the question for me in all this current unrest.

But since I don't share either those beliefs or those fears, I'm guessing I won't understand their answers, no matter how hard I try.

Better to have Mushariff running Pakistan than a fundamentalist pro Taliban regime. They do have the bomb.

One thing that worry's me about all these little countries trying to develop nukes, is how safe are they going to be with security? I worked nuclear security when I was a security policeman in the AF in the late 70's and 80's, so I'm familiar with the stringent regulations dealing with nukes and we still make plenty of mistakes. Did anyone see the recent story of the B-52 that flew from Minot AFB to Barksdale AFB with nuclear armed missiles and no one noticed until they arrived at Barksdale? How easy would it be for an unstable country to, by accident or design, to allow a nuke to fall into the hands of a terrorist group?

Oh, I agree with you on those points. What I meant was, I'm not sure if it's a good thing or a bad thing for him to be in power. If it wasn't him - and NOT a pro-Taliban fundie - I'm not sure it would be any better or worse, you know? But at least with him we have an inkling of where we stand.

And you know their security is soooo diligent there ... I'm surprised no one's gone up in a mushroom cloud yet! With the non-fear of death that's drilled into the heads of the footsoldiers in the Taliban, et al, I kind of expect to see it in the news almost any day. So far, though, so good.

That's a horrible attitude to have, but what else can we do? Hope that cooler heads prevail, I guess.

Of course the world should fear a leader who talks to god, believes himself above international law, invades other countries and has nuclear weapons.

If you're referring to my post, then it was by subsequent constitutional amendment in the 1940s. But in any event, I do like your founding fathers a lot better than the ones where I came from...

Term limits, yes, but I was just thinking of elections in general. Silly me ...

We're dealing with the fallout of term limits on our elected officials here in Michigan right now. Our friends in Lansing seem to have both no knowledge of what's been done before them and don't care when the bills come due, as long as they're not going to be in office at the time. Makes for some fun financial shenanigans. Sigh ...

I guess in this case, you're OK, since I think the outcome of the election with or without term limits would be the same...

Yes, I think you're right. Even the diehard apologists seem to be looking at their shoes and kicking the dirt at the moment.

To me it's rather interesting how people still seem to have strong opinions about Roosevelt and how he "ran" the country during his presidency. I know some people today who would like to reverse the two-term rule (due to their love of either Reagan or Bush), but if you mention that in conjunction with Clinton or any other Democrat and you'd think you were pissing all over the Constitution, the bible, and Reagan's grave!

Two of which, of course ...

At least you don't have the situation where there is a maximum term for a government, but the government can call an election at any time before that. We have just had the situation where the PM was talking up an autumn election and then bottled it when the opinion polls turned against him.

A two edged sword, that. I sure as hell would like a way to cast a no confidence vote at those bastards in the WHite House.

You know, at the beginning of Dubya's presidency, I thought, "I lived through 12 years of Reagan/Bush and the thought that deficits don't matter, I can live through this."

But after seeing all the bullshit that's come from this admin and congress in the past seven years, sometimes all I can think is, "What the fuck were you people thinking when you voted these idiots in?!?!?!"

I mean, it could have been worse, but really ... WTF?

Exactly. I remember upon first hearing that Cheney was involved and thinking, "Oh shit - this is not good, but he won't win." And then he did.

Ouch.

Well, people with leanings in one direction often hope that the other side will nominate a terrible candidate. Sometimes it works out, and sometimes...

What where yall thinking when you voted Bill Clinton twice. He was a plot by TPTB in Arkansas. Arkansas was near last in everything good, near first in everything bad. Nothing we tried could advance the state, so a conspiracy was devised. Get Clinton in the White House and lower the rest of the country. Must have worked, last I checked Arkansas had moved up from 49th to 29th in education. If we get 8 years of Hilary, we should be about first or pretty close. Of course, the rest of the country will be a GLP paradise, but Arkansas will be an intellectual superpower. :D  :P 8)

Yall? I didn't vote for him. In fact, I've never voted for anyone who became a US president.
