Sputnik I launched on October 4, 1957.

However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

EI-EI-O

I remember Sputnik. All of a sudden there was all kinds of -nik stuff. We already had beatniks.

Then the USA trying to catch up. ENjoyed watching the steady stream of Vanguards blowing up on the launch pad.

Ok, KOS. You care to share with those of us less cosmopolitan? :?

(Or in this case, cosmoSpolitan)

And what is that avatar? The lemur with the X-ray eyes? Svengalli squirrel?

Kocmoc?

But what I originally wrote is KLA2. I don't know if it displays properly on all computers...

It's a lemur, but I can't even remember why I put that up...

I guess my computer does not have the character sets needed. The odd thing is that even my text quoted by you ("foreign" characters only) is very different. Wish I could take a "screen shot" of what I see and post but ... don't know how. Ah, well. :?

I have to figure out how these things work. And not just boards, I have the same issue with email. I know a few tricks that seem to work most of the time, but it's still kind of hit-ot-miss. Posting Arabic at apollohoax is rather dicey.

The word I posted should have looked like:

Klaty

except for the "l", which I can't render properly in the Latin character set. It should look like a pi, with one of the legs bent a bit. Did it?

No. Two "e'"s, an "a", and two "o"'s All with accent marks whose names I am too ignorant to know, and too lazy to look up. :P

Why Enzo said

EI-EI-O

Guess he saw the same thing.

And Sergey Pavlovich Korolyov written in (I assume) Russian (yeah, I know - Cyrillic) (Серге́й Па́влович Королёв) was equally garbled.

So much for inter-cultural communication.

Let's hope that international diplomacy does not depend on accurate computer character set conversion. Or maybe it has ... :?

Huh. This is weird. If I set the board language to Russian, then the Russian that others post looks fine to me, and the Russian that I post also looks fine to me. However, the Russian I post looks like crap to everyone else. But when I switch back to English, I can post what I posted before:

Клату

and it should look fine to everyone, me included. (Does it?)

Yes. Now it looks like "KnaTy', (except the "n" looks like "pi" and a flourish on the "K") :)
