RIP WWN

Postby Superluminal » Mon Aug 20, 2007 2:12 am

That's right. The Weekly World News last issue in on news stands now. Goodbye Batboy, Bigfoot, Ed Anger, Spycat and all the other stuff that the "worlds only reliable newspaper" kept us informed about. Buy it now, sell it on E-bay tomorrow!

What are agents J and K going to read now to keep us safe? I'm fairly distraught about this. Remember, what K said, "Best investigative journalism on the planet."

Well, there's still BAUT and IRU.

There were times I knew I was about to kill small children without this to look at in the checkout isles.

Oh no, when I'm "next in line, no waiting" I love to keep up to date on the space aliens.

My all time favorite cover story arc in that rag was this:

One week the cover story was "Sheep gives birth to human baby (big mix up at the sperm bank)" And the incredible story is told.

The very next week, cover story is...

(and I think we can see this coming up the street with a marching band)

"Woman gives birth to baby sheep (big mix up at the sperm bank)"

My only regret is I didn't BUY the damn things. (The papers, not the two babies, although...)

I bought the last issue today. Not sure, but I think it is the only one I ever bought. Had an aunt who bought it every week. When ever I went to visit, I would browse through her stack of WWN's.

Wonder how GLP is taking it?

Years ago, before the dawn of the interweb, I saw an interview with the editor and publisher of the WWN. They were pretty entertaining guys, who openly admitted that they NEVER checked their sources, cribbed loads of stories from Chinese Newspapers, and, when they were sued for whatever reason, it was just as easy for them to pay off whomever was suing them at the time and get on with whatever they were up to than to fight it out in court. They had MONEY at one point in time and many of their writers were journalists who had burned out doing "serious" work for publications such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, etc. They were all out for a lark.

Unfortunately, with the advent of the 'net, all the bullshit that one once had to get the WWN for is now available constantly; just a click away on Google, et al.

And no one - NO ONE - is fact checking anything anymore. Kind of takes the fun out of it all, especially when so many people are soooo serious about it. Just think how many readers didn't know BatBoy was a joke?

Sigh ...

This ties in to Merv Griffin dieing. Remember when you could see the same people on his show every six months or so - only they would change their story for that episode? Many "B" actors got a break by playing the latest outrageous scandal mongers on there. Someone would play a bisexual in a 3-way marriage for one show, then come back later to be jilted husband or UFO researcher or something. Then, come the '80's, all the Jerry Springers popped up and the real freaks came crawling out of the woodwork, gasping for their 15 minutes of fame.

It's a sick, sick world out there ... and those people are proof.

Batboy wasn't real? I read an interview the other day with the editor of WWN. He said they did receive calls from the FBI to quit running stories about Batboy, because they were tired of answering calls from people demanding that they release BB.

Of course he was real. I read about him in the news paper. There are even pictures.
