Ingmar Bergman if for no other reason than the games Bill and Ted played against Death.

"The three big directors for me were Kurosawa, Fellini and Bergman," August said. "The two others had already passed and now Ingmar has also left us. He leaves a big vacuum behind."

I wonder who'll inherit the vacuum.

Am I likely to know any of his movies?

They are usually rather dark and depressing. I'll guess you don't like that sort of film? :)

You might not have seen his films but they have influenced many other films. If you watched The Seventh Seal you would just keep thinking "so that is where Speilberg/Carpenter/Woody Allen got that shot/scene/idea.

The most famous homage to Bergman is in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey where their Death looks exactly like Death in The Seventh Seal, but instead of playing him at chess to save their lives, B&T play him at Battleships, Cluedo and Twister etc.

Most of the films are pretty bleak, I've watched some of them but not all.

Flashing back to film classes and late-night discussions of foreign film! Too bad - while his films were not ones I'd care to add to my library, they are masterworks that all film buffs should see.

P.S. - The Bill & Ted bit was played for me on video, long after the films had had their run. I can honestly say that after that, I watched them both and enjoyed them immensely, but Death playing BattleShip was way over the top! I wonder if Bergman ever saw that? He probably would have laffed, too.
