Beware Carbon Fibre

It’s used on bicycles and aeroplanes because it’s lighter than steel or aluminium. But it’s not as strong.

I have no expertise in submarine construction, but is weight really a consideration?

Why not just use old-fashioned metal?

Apparently, steel is no good for that depth, but titanium is.
This was a carbon fibre/titanium combination, which is problematic because they don't expand and contract the same.
20 milliseconds would be rather painless though.

Thermal expansion - quite a basic engineering consideration. I guess whoever designed it was out of their depth.
