just a little conversation

Is it okay to kill in the name of God? Can ethics, morals and technology peacefully co-exist?

just a little conversation

Postby Bill_Thompson » Sat Mar 18, 2006 6:00 am

Here is a little conversation I just had. I do not have much faith that people will get this. But I hope I am wrong...

net4rocky: hi
Bill Thompson: hi'
net4rocky: remember me
Bill Thompson: are you in Austin?
net4rocky: New Delhi, India
Bill Thompson: oh
Bill Thompson: I kind of do
net4rocky: We talked about India's relation with Pakistan
net4rocky:
Bill Thompson: are you Hindi?
net4rocky: yup
net4rocky: to be precise Hindu
Bill Thompson: sorry
net4rocky: Hindi is our mother tounge
net4rocky: tongue
Bill Thompson: what do the Hindu people believe in a religous sense?
net4rocky: Our belief is not in a single god
net4rocky: each and everything that happens on earth or the stars belong to a different gos
net4rocky: god
Bill Thompson: but isn't there some sort of "om"? like a sound from which the universe was born?
net4rocky: om is the universal phenomenon
net4rocky: it is believed that the earth rotates with the sound of OM
Bill Thompson: is there one human figure who is considered the originator or core of this religion like Budda is for Buddism and Jesus Christ is for Christianity and Mohamed is for Islam?
net4rocky: yup
net4rocky: brahma
Bill Thompson: what year was he alive?
net4rocky: Dont know exactly
net4rocky: he never existed on earth
net4rocky: he is believed to have created the earth
Bill Thompson: would you belive that all this is brand new information to me? I never learned or was taught these things eventhough India is a land of a billion people?
Bill Thompson: ah but brahma is not a humann like Jesus, or Budda or Mohamed?
net4rocky: nope
net4rocky: its all there in the puranas
net4rocky: Brahma, The Creator
Bill Thompson: puranas are texts?
net4rocky: Shiva, The Destroyer
net4rocky: yup
net4rocky: ancient texts
Bill Thompson: but a human had to write the texts, right?
net4rocky: yes
net4rocky: ancient text are also known as Vedas
Bill Thompson: so some human had to say them like Jesus, Budda and Mohamed
net4rocky: you might have heard about them
Bill Thompson: I wish I knew more about this, sorry
net4rocky: ok
net4rocky: these were written by guys like Tulasidas
net4rocky: who had this enlightment
net4rocky: like jesus
net4rocky: he was also the sender of the god
Bill Thompson: ah, like Budda had enlightenment and Jesus.... yes
net4rocky: yup
Bill Thompson: there is a book out now called "Misquoting Jesus" that I want to read
Bill Thompson: it is about how many myths about Jesus have been invented over time
Bill Thompson: it seems very interesting. I want to read this book
net4rocky: its in sanskrit
net4rocky: http://www.webonautics.com/mythology/
Bill Thompson: I think Jesus, Buddah and Mohamed and the Tulasidas all have something in common. They are people who had times on their hands to ponder things. When Jesus was alive, families who were carpenters were the upper class and had wealth to educate their kids. Jesus came from a carpenter's family and had time to ponder. Budda also came from a wealthy family. And Mohamed married a wealthy widdow when he was young and had time to ponder. Do you see what I mean? I think the moral virtues at the core of all religions are the same
net4rocky: yes
net4rocky: all are same
net4rocky: its the different ways that these were imparted
Bill Thompson: I think it is important that people learn this deep truth.
net4rocky: yes exactly
net4rocky: the meaning behind them
Bill Thompson: I want to copy this conversation we are having and post it in a forum where people can hear it.
Bill Thompson: They will probably not believe and argue with me. But at least it is said, and maybe years from now people will understand

(Edit: Color added to make it easier to read)

What, so you're saying that essentially, the major religions you mentioned in your conversation all have the same intentions of internally bettering their believers?

Isn't that kind of what religions are supposed to do?

Enlightenment & knowledge of our creator come from within. Jewish, Muslim, and Christianity all share the common patriarch, Abraham. When you look at the actual belief behind the specific words of any religion, you find the common threads.

I'm just offering my views, I don't support any specific religion or belief structure. Thanks for sharing your converstion, Bill.

But...In your hands you hold a torch for many eyes to see, So hold it high that they may light their candlewicks from thee.

I still say that while any Religion can make a very intriguing (and long) bed-time story, taking it too seriously is a bit silly. That's just my opinion, of course.

I will admit that I could use some more knowledge of Buddha, however. You bring up a good point, Bill; an incredible amount of people follow this faith, but yet education of it is rather limited in mainstream society in the U.S.

I think the bottom line here is that the religions of the world have far more in common with each other than they have differences.

So do practical political religions. They usually have two basic tenets:

a) what is good for me is righteous

b) what is bad for me is evil
They call me Mr Celsius!

You forgot the third:

c) if you believe differently than me you should be converted/taught the truth/killed

Buddhists don't follow 3, though. Very few people died for not believing in Buddhism.
