I'm pretty sure that it had to do with the time that this was drawn, in the Rennaissance period; where Humanism was rising, and people were more focused on the human race and the human body.

Micheangelo was getting in trouble for showing so much tit and ass, they thought it was too over the top for a place of worship! In fact, one of the cardinals demanded he cover up the naughty parts so Micheangelo painted him in The Last Judgement as an Underling of satan with donkey ears! I always found that hilarious.

Nonetheless, there was a bit of a shifting perception in the Rennaissance period, and I might add there wasn't such an uproar that Michael was stopped outright.

Later popes had clothing painted in and went around putting fig leafs on statues. If it was a male statue, they broke of his penis and then put on the fig leaf. I always wondered what they did with all those schlongs...

Besides, they probably gave Michelangelo more leeway than most since he was able to engineer the completion of the dome of the Sistine Chapel, a dome that sat uncompleted for 600 yrs.
