Scientists Create First Living Organism With Artificial DNA

Postby Lance » Sat Oct 24, 2015 7:23 pm

Interesting.

The Journal 'Nature' wrote:Scientists Create First Living Organism With 'Artificial' DNA

For billions of years, the history of life has been written with just four letters — A, T, C and G, the labels given to the DNA subunits contained in all organisms. That alphabet has just grown longer, researchers announce, with the creation of a living cell that has two 'foreign' DNA building blocks in its genome.

Hailed as a breakthrough by other scientists, the work is a step towards the synthesis of cells able to churn out drugs and other useful molecules. It also raises the possibility that cells could one day be engineered without any of the four DNA bases used by all organisms on Earth. more...

Interesting.

When I stumbled over this, I was alarmed, because how can you trust someone Who says such utter bullshit like this:
If you read a book that was written with four letters, you’re not going to be able to tell many interesting stories,” Romesberg says. “If you’re given more letters, you can invent new words, you can find new ways to use those words and you can probably tell more interesting stories.

The computer in front of me weites all its stories with only TWO letters. How boring must that be?

Sounds like they were trying to dumb it down to the point of it just sounding dumb.

Yes. Only that science.com isn't usually read by your Fox.consuming retard very often. He forgot that, apparently.

Yeah, those four letters really limit life. The billions of DNA profiles are just SOOO puny.

I misread at first. They engineered some new ersatz DNA into living cells. They did not make living cells up from DNA, ersatz or otherwise. That would really be something if they made a living cell from scratch.

Crikey, a cell is quite a complicated thing. Start with simple things, like viruses. For example, the HIV virus was engineered in a laboratory, no?

I think they did it in the studio building where they filmed the moon landing scenes.
