The New Portal

Postby Lance » Thu Dec 20, 2012 6:35 pm

Do you guys actually use the new portal or do you just link directly to the root of the forum?

I would appreciate if all the regular users would answer so I know if I'm wasting my time or not.

It's very configurable. I'm open to suggestions about adding, removing, rearranging stuff.

OK, I'm guilty - I try to get past it ASAP every time I visit.

Forum looks real shiny though.

A number of forums I frequent have that type page, and people wail if it stops working. I myself never use them. I go for the index page, and look for the sections with a new message indication. So if current events and llamas have new posts, I open them, otherwise I keep looking. Having new posts in no apparent order other than time doesn't speak to me. I know some forums, maybe even this one, lets one "subscribe" to threads. You get emails telling you someone responded to your posts? Well, geez, I am gonna check in anyway, why clutter up my email? I will see there are responses in the index symbols.

I am open to other uses.

I like it, but tend to plough straight through it to the main forum index page. Therefore, I wouldn't shed any tears if it were to go despite liking it.

Sometimes I'm there, sometimes I skip it.

I do like the "at a reasonable cost" part of the mission statement!

I'm slightly disappointed to see that it's not a Secret Mission Statement.

Re. my vote on the poll (no, I don't like it) -

I think it is actually a beautiful portal. If this were some mega-forum where there is a load of unread posts in 20 interesting topics every single time I log in, then I would probably also find it practical. But IRU is more something of a living room or pub. I step in and have a look around, chat up the bartender and have a seat looking around who's there. I don't need a front lobby telling me what's going on in that big, difficult to navigate mega-casino. It's very nicely done, but it doesn't add value.

No, I don't know how to use it became the default selection for me. I don;t know what I would use it for. I can't really say I don;t like it.

Dunno. There just doesn't seem to be an option for 'really like it' in the voting bars.

A number of users seem to have their own individual counters in that flag-counter-thingy at the bottom . . .

I noticed that, and also noted that Lianachan and I are barely keeping pace with Arneb but lagging well behind Tubes. I expect Spain to get a boost at the beginning of next month . . .

Well that's easy - I am on sick leave at the moment, and thus got too much time on my hands.
